One on one writing residencies in Maricao, work exchange!
I live on a beautiful 34 acre portion of forested mountain in Maricao, Puerto Rico. My health has recently made it essential that there be someone else around to keep an eye on me. Rather than hiring a helper, which I can't afford, I am experimenting with setting up a series of exchanges. You come stay on the land in a small trailer for at least a month, and depending on compatibility, several months. I give you one on one mentoring on writing, and/or my other areas of expertise as an arts based activist.
You would need to be around, and help in two areas--physical tasks I can't handle-- lifting, digging, and some other garden tasks, and driving. If you don't have a car in Puerto Rico, I'd need to raise money to rent or lease one, and perhaps have you help me buy one.
On the principle of resourcing my own first, I would give preference to diasporicans wanting to explore roots/connect with land and culture, and then women/genderqueer POC. White folks can still apply, especially lefty Jews, disabled folks for whom the site is accessible enough, and working class folks.
My hope is that instead of having a permanent tenant, I can host a series of guests in a symbiotic and pleasurable way, offer something special to people who couldn't otherwise have extended access to me, and get the help I need from someone who is happy to be on this gorgeous land.
The land is on the crest of the central mountains, with views of both coasts
