One on One and Group Mentoring
My working assumptions:
- All humans are highly creative and have unique truths to share.
- The main obstacles to expressing that creativity are rooted in social oppression, including the systematic disrespect of young people.
- They can be overcome through a variety of practices and decisions.
- Creative blocks arise when we need to correct course. They are exciting opportunities to make our work more authentic.
- No matter how solitary our actual creative time is, we all work better when we're not isolated.
- Much of the work of editing is about removing untruths and inaccuracies. When writing is unclear or disorganized, it's often the result of fear: self-censorship, writing according to someone else's priorities, fear of visibility or criticism, feeling unauthorized to speak, etcetera. All these issues can be resolved by clarifying and standing behind your truth.
Working with Integrity
I believe art is one of the most powerful tools for social change. As makers of social justice art, we need to work with the highest possible integrity, in order to grow ourselves as artist-activists and make the best, most effective art we can. I will work with you to define your own artists' code of ethics, a set of principles to guide your work and keep you on track.
Individual Writing Support

I can help you clarify your projects, find your most authentic voice and tell your most powerful truths. We can identify your strengths and challenges as a writer, the inner and outer pressures that get in your way, and ways to set your life up to support your best work. I take on a limited number of clients whose projects interest me, and give priority to people who have the least access to thoughtful critiques of their work because of their identities or subject matter. My rate is $150 per 90 minute session. If you prepay for four sessions, I give a $50 discount. Sessions can be in person, by phone or teleconference, (Skype or Google Plus.) I am open to the possibility of work exchange.
Individual Research Support

I also offer mentoring in historical and cultural research related to social justice projects, performance art, poetry and other artistic projects, organizing, and collective healing work. My rate is $150 per 90 minute session. If you prepay for four sessions, I give a $50 discount. Sessions can be in person, by phone or teleconference, (Skype or Google Plus.)
Project Intensives

I will work with individuals, or teams of up to three people, for four hours, developing a writing or other cultural project, with or without research components. This is a good choice at the start of a major project, or when the work is blocked and needs a jump start. What I offer is tailored to individual projects and people, but the principles I work with are the same as in my one on one work. I can also help collaborators work out roles, divisions of labor and creative processes, and help individual creators (including team members) set up support for their ongoing work.
Intensives are also helpful for people who prefer to work face to face and live outside the Boston area. The $600 fee includes up to two hours of prep time to become familiar with your project goals and participants.
