Letters from Earth

Picture
Letters from Earth is a poetic journalism project, part travelogue, part documentary, an exploration of the impacts of environmental injustice on our country and our bodies.

The ecological crisis of our world is a crisis of human relationships.  The destruction of our ecosystem is done for profit, by human beings organized into corporations for that purpose. While all life on earth is affected, the human consequences fall most quickly and heavily on people already made vulnerable by inequality and exploitation, and considered as expendable as our rivers, forests, oceans and atmosphere, by those who control our economies.  Our planet and our bodies are damaged by the same forces, for the same reasons.

I am an immigrant Puerto Rican Jewish woman, and a survivor of both ecological and sexual violence. As a child, I was exposed to dangerous pesticides and pollutants, and to the international trade in child pornography, both expressions of racism and the colonial status of Puerto Rico.My body has suffered from these assaults, and I live with disability, chronic pain, exhaustion, and severe chemical sensitivity as a result. My body is full of stories that also express the trouble of the world.
I feel called to respond out of my own life history to the whole complex of disasters we call climate change by doing what I do best: the work of an activist artist.
